Although its origins are said to have been in the Mediterranean, Torrontés is predominately grown in Argentina, making it the country’s characteristic white grape. Some compare Torrontés’ aromas and flavors to Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc and there may be similarities but this grape is truly unique. The regions of Salta and Mendoza are home to this varietal, and while Torrontés from Salta is considered by its aficionados as the best in the country, by volume Mendoza produces the largest amount.
Torrontés is a light yellow wine that occasionally has golden and green hues. Its aroma is reminiscent of roses, jasmine, and geraniums. In the mouth it is pure fruit salad, sometimes with touches of honey or oregano. Its aromas suggest a sweet wine but its taste reveals a refreshing acidity in its crisp, clean finish.
In food pairings, the citrus taste and hint of flower scent seems to be the ideal complement to poultry, specifically chicken and turkey. As part of a seafood feast, Torrontés brings out the zest of freshwater fish, mussels, scallops, shrimp, and the tang of shellfish. Torrontés is versatile enough to balance spicy dishes including Indian and Thai cuisine.
If you have not tried Torrontés, you are missing out on the bright and alive flavors that represents Argentinean cultural essence.
