Make Them a Smart Investment
So, you've painted your own living room... that does not mean you will be able to do all your home improvements alone. When you use a contractor, it is important to know when and where not to sign on the dotted line. Home improvements add to the comfort and value of your home, but they often require the services of a contractor for building, finishing, repairing, or replacing. Choosing a reliable contractor and knowing what to look for goes a long way toward a successful project.

Never pay for an estimate.
Reliable contractors furnish free estimates in writing, complete with specifications for materials to be used.
Do not show estimates to competing contractors.
Be wary of contractors who quote you a flat price for anything without visiting your home and inspecting the work site.
Get the contractor's phone number and call the Better Business Bureau for a reliability report.
Does the company provide liability and worker's compensation insurance to protect you in the event of an accident? If the company offers a long term guarantee, have you reason to believe the company will still be around to fulfill the guarantee?
If the work is to be subcontracted, will the contractor post a bond to protect you against liens on your home?
Does the written contract include all oral promises made by the salesman?
Does the contract include exact specifications for materials, including quality or grade of materials, brand names, weight, color and size of materials?
