The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that in 1998, the most recent year for data, there were 15,600 fires, 20 deaths and 370 injuries associated with clothes dryers.
The National Institutes of Health estimate in 1999 that figure rose to 24,000 fires causing over $96 million in property damage.
The NIH Public Safety News, Issue 99-02 states “Clothes dryers start more residential fires than any other home appliance.”
