Lee's Toy & Hobby started in 1952 by Pete's parents, Sherman and Micky Marcus, and his grandfather, Maurice Hendel. After the Korean War, Pete's uncle, Chic Hendel, entered the business in New London. In 1962, they opened up the Groton store in the same shopping center it is in now. At the time the company was called Lee's Kiddyland, but when Richard and Pete bought the store in 1987 they changed the name to Lee's Toy & Hobby. The name "Lee" was Pete's grandmother's middle name.
